INTERVIEW CORNER #23: Eric Trautmann

Η ίδια συμμετοχή δημιουργών comics είναι φανερή και σε videogames, με κραυγαλέο πρόσφατο παράδειγμα το online role playing game DC UNIVERSE ONLINE, στου οποίου τα credits συναντάμε ακόμη και τον Marv Wolfman (CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS).

Εκτός από τα διάφορα tie-ins σε videogames που έχει γράψει σε μορφή comics, ο Trautmann έχει συνεργαστεί ουκ ολίγες φορές με τον Greg Rucka (ACTION COMICS), στα PERFECT DARK: SECOND FRONT (ως editor), CHECKMATE, FINAL CRISIS: RESIST και ACTION COMICS, ενώ έχει αναλάβει μόνος του comics όπως τα JSA vs KOBRA: ENGINES OF FAITH και MIGHTY CRUSADERS και έχει συμμετάσχει και στην ανθολογία της Image, POPGUN.

H ιστορία του, μάλιστα, στο POPGUN VOL.2, αποτέλεσε τη βάση για το webcomic WIDE AWAKE, το οποίο ξεκίνησε το 2009 με τον Trautmann να μοιράζεται τα συγγραφικά καθήκοντα με τον Brandon Jerwa (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, HIGHLANDER, G.I. JOE).

Εκτός από comics, έχεις γράψει και επιμεληθεί ιστορίες, βιβλία και σειρές για videogames. Πόσο διαφέρει αυτό από τη συγγραφή comics;

Έχεις συνεργαστεί με τον Greg Rucka και άλλους συγγραφείς σε πολλές δουλειές. Το να γράφεις μαζί με άλλο συγγραφέα είναι πιο εύκολο ή πιο δύσκολο από το να είσαι ο μόνος συγγραφέας του τίτλου;

Χα! Και ναι… και όχι.

Από τον Νοέμβριο το όνομά σου ήταν στα credits των δύο τίτλων της Dynamite: το RED SONJA και το VAMPIRELLA. Υπάρχει κάποια συγκεκριμένη κατεύθυνση που έχεις στο μυαλό σου για τους δύο τίτλους;

Ναι.

Η Vampirella υπήρχε πολύ καιρό πριν τα βαμπίρ γίνουν μόδα της pop κουλτούρας. Πώς θα είναι αυτή η σειρά κάτι περισσότερο από μια μανία που … απλώς αποφέρει κέρδη;

Χα!

Ποια είναι, κατά τη γνώμη σου, τα στοιχεία που οδήγησαν τόσους καταξιωμένους συγγραφείς να γράψουν την VAΜPIRELLA; Ποιοι ήταν οι λόγοι που ανέλαβες εσύ αυτό το έργο;

Είναι καθόλου τρομακτικό το να γράφεις για χαρακτήρες-σύμβολα όπως η Red Sonja και η Vampirella;

Επίσης, έχεις συνεισφέρει στο τμήμα marketing κάποιων comics, με το GIDEON-II, την ιστοσελίδα για το Checkmate και το Montoya Journal για το THE QUESTION του Greg Rucka. Είναι σημαντικός ο ρόλος του marketing στην βιομηχανία των comics;

Μπορείς να μας πεις για το webcomic WIDE AWAKE; Θα υπάρχει επίσης μια ταινία που βασίζεται σε αυτό;

Αχ, ναι.

Υπάρχουν άλλα σχέδια για το άμεσο μέλλον; Διάβασα ότι γράφεις ένα graphic novel μαζί με τον Brandon Jerwa για την Vertigo. Μπορείς να μας πεις περισσότερα γι ‘αυτό;

The increasingly close relationship between media (such as cinema, television and videogames) and comics these days has become more obvious than ever. To see for yourselves, all you need to do is to open IMDb, for example, and search for your favorite comic writer. You’ll most likely find him mentioned in the credits of a TV or film adaptation of the comic. The comic creator’s involvement is noticeable in videogames as well, with the online role playing game DC UNIVERSE ONLINE being an obvious example and even Marv Wolfman (CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS) is mentioned in the game’s credits.

Long before such “adaptations” became a fashion, comic industry had managed to cooperate with a promising writer who specializes in videogame scripts: this week’s guest, Eric Trautmann. Trautmann started with videogames by Microsoft (like HALO) and after all these years achieved to become the writer of two major titles: RED SONJA and VAMPIRELLA (here is a preview of the latter on CBR).

With the roster of writers in the two preceding titles including names such as Roy Thomas, Barry Windsor-Smith, Howard Chaykin, Warren Ellis, James Robinson and Frank Frazetta among others, his work is certainly difficult. Trautmann, however, has acquired the necessary experience all these years.

Apart from the various tie-ins in videogames he has written in comic versions, Trautmann has cooperated many times with Greg Rucka (ACTION COMICS), in PERFECT DARK: SECOND FRONT (as editor), CHECKMATE, FINAL CRISIS: RESIST and ACTION COMICS, has taken over comics like JSA vs. KOBRA: ENGINES OF FAITH and MIGHTY CRUSADERS on his own and has participated in Image’s anthology, POPGUN.

His story in POPGUN VOL.2 was the basis for the web comic WIDE AWAKE, which began in 2009 with Trautmann cooperating with Brandon Jerwa (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, HIGHLANDER, GI JOE) on the script. WIDE AWAKE is about to be adapted in a film, as mentioned long ago by Elias Katirtzigianoglou.

Finally, apart from doing interesting comics, Trautmann also knows how to promote them. He is one of the creators of the viral marketing site GIDEON-II, which promotes the comic CHECKMATE, but also Montoya Journal, a diary written by The Question, a DC Universe hero, which ended up to journalists and comic fans.

He is, therefore, a man who has worked on many projects, both within and outside the industry of comics and definitely has a lot to say, especially about both the titles he has taken over:

Apart from comics, you have written and edited stories, books and sequences for video games. How is that different from writing a comic?

Tremendously different; often, “scripts” for dialogue in video games are assembled in Excel spreadsheets, which is quite useful for tracking which text string goes where in game, but makes for a maddening experience when it comes to writing the thing.

Beyond that, of course, are some basic similarities, at least for me. I tend to approach a story from a character-first standpoint, and that’s applicable across both mediums.

You have collaborated with Greg Rucka and other writers on many occasions. Is co-writing easier or more difficult than being the sole writer of a title?

Ha! Yes…and no.

On the one hand, I’ve been blessed with some fantastic writing collaborators–Greg, Brandon Jerwa, my old writing partners from my Microsoft days, Tim O’Brien and Brannon Boren. I find co-writing fairly easy, as I tend to work with guys that know me, that know my strengths, know my weaknesses, and vice versa. Others’ mileage may vary, of course. Solo writing is a little more difficult, simply because there isn’t that same process of bouncing crazy ideas off your partner, but does have the advantage of being more one’s own voice, one’s own “vision” for the story.

Starting November your name was in the credits of two Dynamite titles: RED SONJA and VAMPIRELLA. Is there a particular direction you have in mind for those two titles?

Yes. In the case of RED SONJA, I want to keep things fairly “old school” — hearkening back to the Roy Thomas days, I hope — and push fairly personal storylines along for Sonja, but also showing how her passage through the Hyborian Kingdoms has a dramatic effect. We’ll be seeing some pretty large-scale conflicts brewing. The rise of kings, the fall of emperors, and so on.

For VAMPIRELLA, I’m taking a pretty back-to-basics approach there, as well; I want to really show what makes Vampirella unique and interesting, as well as amping up the level of action and violence. Vampirella — though she’s been a showcase for such stories in the past — is not a superhero. That’s always been an uncomfortable fit for the character.

Vampirella was around long before vampires became the next thing in pop culture. In what ways should we expect the series to be something more than a… fad cashing in?

Ha! Vampires won’t be sparkling, for one thing. And, I’d argue that Vampires have always been a “pop culture thing,” dating back to Stoker. They never really go away.

What are, in your opinion, the elements that have driven so many acclaimed writers to write VAMPIRELLA? What were the reasons you took upon the task?

I wouldn’t presume to speak for other creators; I’m sure everyone had a different reason for taking on the character. For me, it’s the idea that, sure, she’s a gorgeous, statuesque creature, but she’s also something otherworldly and terrifying. People would, I think, instinctively recoil from her, which leaves her pretty isolated, even from those she’s vowed to protect. There’s some room for real drama there.

As to the reasons I took on the job, well, it’s always nice to be asked, of course. And my experience with Dynamite on RED SONJA was quite enjoyable. The opportunity to relaunch such an established, iconic character was too good to pass up.

Is writing for such iconic characters as Red Sonja and Vampirella any intimidating at all?

Absolutely. One only has to look at the roster of talent that has contributed to the legacies of these characters — Forrest Ackerman, Roy Thomas, Barry Windsor-Smith, Howard Chaykin, Warren Ellis, Kurt Busiek, James Robinson, Grant Morrison, Frank Frazetta, Esteban Maroto, and the list goes on… and on… and on… — and unless you possess an ego the size of Mt. Everest, the only sensible response is intimidation.
But, that’s part of the fun, too. Like working the tightrope without a net.

You have also contributed in the marketing section of some comics, with the GIDEON-II website for Checkmate and the Montoya Journal for Greg Rucka’s THE QUESTION. Is marketing essential for the comics industry?

I don’t know if it’s “essential,” viral marketing like what I contributed to, but it’s certainly easy enough and affordable enough for creators to do on their own for personal projects, or for publishers to take on for established properties.
I think it’s a great way to give the reader some investment in a setting or character, and is a nice “value-add” to a project. Plus, it’s a nice way to convince readers to recommend the title to others. Never a bad thing, that.

Can you tell us about the WIDE AWAKE webcomic? Will there also be a feature film based on it?

Ah, yes. Our poor, long-delayed webcomic. WIDE AWAKE was intended as a weekly webcomic — six pages a week. Co-created and co-written with my good friend Brandon Jerwa, WIDE AWAKE is a horror/adventure comic, featuring a protagonist — Amanda Carter — who battles terrifying monsters in her dreams. In the dreamscape, she has honed abilities and “powers” to combat the horrors within, but, if she fails to defeat them, when she wakes back up, the monster follows her into the real world.

And lurking behind it all is a sinister force, one that wants Amanda to dream the dream that ends all that is. That’s the overall concept; we have several months of story written, but we hit a snag with our art team, which has been frustrating and problematic. There is, however, good news on the art front, which I can’t talk about … yet. But soon.

As for the film, the hope is that, yes, a feature film will be produced based on the property. WIDE AWAKE was optioned by Do-Over Entertainment, and I’ve read the first act of the screenplay recently. It was terrific, and is apparently picking up some real steam amongst the Hollywood folk. Fingers crossed.

Are there any other plans for the immediate future? I read that you are co-writing a graphic novel with Brandon Jerwa for Vertigo. Can you tell us more about it?

DC/Vertigo’s policies won’t let me comment on the book ’til they announce it. Sorry.

What I can say: Brandon and I completed the script work over a year ago, and the artist — who is a name you’ll recognize, an Eisner winner and just an amazing talent — is perhaps a third of the way through drawing the book. It’s a contemporary military drama (no monkeys or robots or werewolves or anything).
