Είναι ο γιος του θρυλικού John Romita Sr και έχει αφήσει το στίγμα του σε σειρές, όπως τα THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, X-MEN και IRON MAN, ενώ έχει δημιουργήσει και creator owned projects, όπως GRAY AREA και το KICK-ASS (μαζί με τον Mark Millar), το οποίο μεταφέρθηκε πρόσφατα στο σινεμά (η πρεμιέρα του στη χώρα μας είναι σήμερα). Η επίσκεψή του στο Comicdom Con Athens 2010 χαροποίησε πολλούς fans των comics, οι οποίοι έσπευσαν να τον δον από κοντά στο workshop του, το Q&A και, φυσικά, το signing του, στη διάρκεια του οποίου επικράτησε το αδιαχώρητο. Πριν λίγους μήνες κυκλοφόρησε και το prequel του SURROGATES, με τίτλο FLESH AND BONE, ενώ σύντομα (5 Νοεμβρίου) η βασισμένη στο comic ταινία, με πρωταγωνιστή τον Bruce Willis, θα ξεκινήσει να προβάλεται και στους ελληνικούς κινηματογράφους. Με αφορμή τα παραπάνω, αδράξαμε την ευκαιρία και μιλήσαμε με τον συγγραφέα του comic, Robert Venditti. Διαβάστε παρακάτω τι μάθαμε… …για το SURROGATES και το πώς του ήρθε η ιδέα: Ήθελα να γράψω comics. Ξεκίνησα να διαβάζω comics το 2000 και το εικαστικό τους στοιχείο πραγματικά με γοήτευσε. Ήθελα να γράψω ένα comic, αλλά αναζητούσα μια ιδέα που θα δούλευε πολύ καλά και οπτικά. Όταν ήμουν στο κολέγιο, έγραψα ένα βιβλίο για κάποιους ανθρώπους που ήταν εθισμένοι στο internet και σε chat rooms και παιχνίδια και διατηρούσαν online ταυτότητες που οι ίδιοι είχαν κατασκευάσει. Αυτή η ιδέα μου έμεινε για πολύ καιρό και αργότερα σκέφτηκα: “Τι θα γινόταν, αν αντί να χρειάζεται να συνδεθείς σε κάποιο υπολογιστή για να δημιουργήσεις αυτή την ταυτότητα υπήρχε η τεχνολογία που σε επέτρεπε να στείλεις αυτή την ταυτότητα σου στον έξω κόσμο ώστε να μπορούσες με αυτή να πας στη δουλειά σου και να ζεις τη ζωή σου; Αν οι άνθρωποι μπορούσαν να είναι αυτό το πρόσωπο συνεχώς… πώς θα ήταν ο κόσμος”; Από εκεί μου ήρθε η ιδέα. … για την μεταφορά του comic σε ταινία: Δεν ήθελα να ελέγχω την ταινία. Από την οπτική γωνία που το είδα, οι σκηνοθέτες και σεναριογράφοι ήταν δημιουργοί και αν ήθελαν να κάνουν κάτι με την ιστορία μου τότε θα το έβλεπα σαν κοπλιμέντο. Δεν ήθελα να είμαι ο άνθρωπος που θα στέκεται από πάνω τους και θα τους λέει τι θα πρέπει να κάνουν. Δεν είχα πολύ έλεγχο, αλλά δεν προσπάθησα να έχω κιόλας. Δεν ήταν κάτι που με ενδιέφερε… … Μου αρέσει. Ήταν μια απολαυστική ταινία. Πρόκειται για το BREAKDOWNS: PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG %@&*!, τη συλλογή των comics του Art Spiegelman (MAUS) που δημοσιεύθηκαν, ανάμεσα στο 1972 και το 1977, σε διάφορα underground έντυπα. Λίγο μετά τις γιορτές, τρεις από τους συντάκτες του Comicdom συγκεντρώθηκαν για να σαλιαρίσουν πάνω από το κάνουν review στο BREAKDOWNS.
