INTERVIEW CORNER #62: Τάσος Μαραγκός

Πολλοί ίσως θεωρούν ότι το να αποτυπώσεις την καθημερινότητα σε μια ιστορία είναι εύκολο. Και ίσως είναι. Αλλά το να φτιάξεις μια καθημερινή ιστορία που έχει ενδιαφέρον για μια μεγάλη μερίδα αναγνωστών και να καταφέρεις να κρατήσεις το ενδιαφέρον τους όχι για εβδομάδες ή μήνες, αλλά για χρόνια, είναι σίγουρα μια δύσκολη αποστολή. Πόσο, μάλιστα, αν πάρεις τη δύσκολη απόφαση να εντάξεις την ιστορία σου σε ένα από τα πιο απαιτητικά είδη, στο χιουμοριστικό!

Ευτυχώς, όμως, που υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που κάνουν κάτι τέτοιο να φαίνεται εύκολο! Και ένας από αυτούς είναι ο καλεσμένος αυτής της εβδομάδας, ο Τάσος Μαραγκός. Με το KRAK KOMIKS (το έβδομο τεύχος του κυκλοφορεί από σήμερα στα comic shops και τα βιβλιοπωλεία) έχει καταφέρει να μας βάλει μέσα σε μια ιστορία καθημερινή, η οποία δε στηρίζεται τόσο σε υπερβολικές καταστάσεις ή εξωφρενικούς διαλόγους για να γίνει ενδιαφέρουσα ή αστεία. Μιλάω συγκεκριμένα για το HARD ROCK, την ιστορία που καταλαμβάνει το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του κάθε τεύχους του KRAK και εξιστορεί καταστάσεις που, λίγο-πολύ, τις έχουμε ζήσει όλοι.

Παράλληλα, στα τεύχη του KRAK υπάρχουν και μικρότερες ιστορίες, οι οποίες αφήνουν πιο ελεύθερο το δημιουργό ανάμεσα στις δόσεις καθημερινότητας που καλείται να συμπεριλάβει. Τα strips Κ.ΟΜΙΣΤΑΣ και GREEK COMICS WONDERWORLD είναι, επιπλέον, και πιο “δηλητηριώδη”, όπως ήταν και κάποιες δουλειές του Μαραγκού πριν και παράλληλα με το KRAK KOMIKS. Αναφέρομαι στο fanzine (που πλέον εκδίδεται από την 9η Διάσταση) με τον τίτλο BIG BANG! COMICS, αλλά και σε άλλες δουλειές του παρελθόντος που είδαμε σε ανθολογίες, περιοδικά, εφημερίδες και εκθέσεις. Ανάμεσα σε αυτά ξεχωρίζει το SUPER CONDOM, η συμμετοχή του καλλιτέχνη στην ανθολογία AT THE DRIVE INK, αλλά και το ΟΛΑ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΚΟΜΙΚΞΣ, το strip που εκδιδόταν στο περιοδικό 9 της εφημερίδας ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΟΤΥΠΙΑ. Εκεί ο Μαραγκός τα έβαζε με την επικαιρότητα, η αναστολή της κυκλοφορίας του περιοδικού, όμως, δε μας επέτρεψε να χαρούμε περισσότερα strips.

Ας είναι, όμως. Η χρονιά που διανύουμε είναι ιδιαίτερα απλόχερη, όσον αφορά στις δόσεις που μπορούμε να πάρουμε από τα έργα του Τάσου Μαραγκού. Πρώτα απ’ όλα, έχουν ήδη κυκλοφορήσει δύο τεύχη του KRAK KOMIKS και αναμένεται σύντομα κι ένα τρίτο. Επιπλέον, ο δημιουργός συμμετέχει και στο blog The Very Closed Circle, όπου μπορούμε να δούμε (αν και σπάνια) κάποια μικρά strips με την υπογραφή του. Και, φυσικά, έχει κι άλλα σχέδια στα σκαριά, τα οποία θα πραγματοποιήσει μόλις το επιτρέψει ο ελεύθερος χρόνος του.

Διαβάστε, λοιπόν, τη συνέντευξη του καλεσμένου αυτής της εβδομάδας, Τάσου Μαραγκού, (ή, εναλλακτικά, κάντε scroll down στο τέλος της συνέντευξης και ακούστε τη) και μάθετε τι μας είπε για το KRAK KOMIKS και τα μελλοντικά σχέδιά του:

Έχεις περάσει κι εσύ, όπως και πολλοί Έλληνες δημιουργοί, από την περίοδο της αυτοέκδοσης. Τι κέρδισες από εκείνη την εμπειρία και γιατί τελικά αποφάσισες να δοκιμάσεις την τύχη σου στις εκδοτικές;

Πιστεύω ότι κάθε δημιουργός comics θα πρέπει να περάσει από την αυτοέκδοση ή από τη φάση του fanzine, γιατί έχει πολλά να κερδίσει – πολλές εμπειρίες. Από το να τρέχει στα φεστιβάλ, να μοιράζει το comic του και γενικά να παλεύει από την αρχή της δημιουργίας του μέχρι να το δώσει στον αναγνώστη.

Παίρνει μαθήματα, δηλαδή;

Αρκετά μαθήματα, ναι.

Και πότε είναι η ώρα να σταματήσεις την αυτοέκδοση;

Δεν ξέρω ποια μπορεί να είναι η ώρα. Μπορεί να σου βγαίνει καλά και να το συνεχίζεις. Ο λόγος που εγώ σταμάτησα την αυτοέκδοση είναι ότι δεν υπήρχαν χρήματα για να εκδίδω το δικό μου comic και να πηγαίνει σε όλη την Ελλάδα και σε βιβλιοπωλεία κτλ. Ήταν αρκετά δύσκολο.

Οπότε σε μια εκδοτική είχες περισσότερες δυνατότητες.

Σε μια εκδοτική, ναι, φεύγουν πολλά από πάνω μου. Δηλαδή, εγώ μόνο το φτιάχνω, το στέλνω και πλέον τα υπόλοιπα τα αναλαμβάνει η εκδοτική.

Σε τι βαθμό διαθέτoυν αυτοβιογραφικά στοιχεία οι ιστορίες και τα strips του KRAK KOMIKS;

Όχι σε πολύ μεγάλο βαθμό. Εξαρτάται κι από το τεύχος, φυσικά. Ας πούμε, το #1 έχει αρκετά τέτοια στοιχεία. Από εκεί και πέρα, βασίζομαι σε κάποια πράγματα και κάποιες καταστάσεις που έζησα εγώ, αλλά τις αλλοιώνω τελείως. Δεν είναι αληθινά όλα αυτά που έχουν συμβεί στις ιστορίες του HARD ROCK.

Κατά πόσο πρέπει να παίρνουμε στα σοβαρά αυτά που γράφεις στα strips Κ.ΟΜΙΣΤΑΣ και GREEK COMICS WONDERWORLD; Έχουν κάποια δόση αλήθειας ή είναι απλά χαβαλές;

Και τα δύο, βασικά. Κάποιες ιστοριούλες μπορεί να είναι απλά χαβαλές, κάποιες να έχουν και κάποια αλήθεια. Αλλά για το αν πρέπει να το πάρει κάποιος στα σοβαρά, ο καθένας όπως το κρίνει – κι ό,τι βγάλει από την ιστορία όταν τη διαβάσει.

Έχει ενοχληθεί ποτέ κάποιος;

Όχι, δεν έχω μάθει κάτι σχετικό, αλλά δε νομίζω ότι θα έπρεπε να ενοχληθεί κάποιος. Θα ήθελα να το μάθω, πάντως…

Στο HARD ROCK δε συναντάμε τόσο υπερβολικά στοιχεία ή ασυνήθιστα γεγονότα, παρόλα αυτά, όμως, η ιστορία είναι πάντα ενδιαφέρουσα και το χιούμορ άφθονο. Πώς το καταφέρνεις αυτό με μια κατά βάση “συνηθισμένη” ιστορία;

Να σου πω ότι δεν έχω ιδέα; Κοίτα, βασικά – φαίνεται κιόλας – το HARD ROCK είναι πολύ επηρεασμένο από το HATE του Peter Bagge. Όταν διάβασα για πρώτη φορά το ΗΑΤΕ (το 2004, το 2005, δε θυμάμαι), είπα ότι θέλω να κάνω ένα τέτοιο comic. Και απλώς έγραφα τις ιστορίες. Βέβαια, σκεφτόμουν ότι δε μπορείς να γράψεις μια ιστορία για το ότι πήγες στο σούπερ μάρκετ, γύρισες και τέλος – κάτι πρέπει να γίνεται κιόλας, είτε αστείο είτε μη.

Ποιοι είναι οι λόγοι της μεταγραφής του KRAK KOMIKS από τη Giganto Books στη Jemma Press;

Με τον Τάσο (σ.σ.: εννοεί τον Τάσο Παπαϊώαννου, εκδότη της Giganto) τα πηγαίναμε μια χαρά και ακόμη τα πηγαίνουμε, απλώς εγώ ήθελα, ας πούμε, μια αναβάθμιση – να βγαίνουν περισσότερα τεύχη το χρόνο, να γίνεται μια καλύτερη διανομή. Το συζητήσαμε με τον Τάσσο και δε γινόταν κάτι τέτοιο στη Giganto, κι έτσι επέλεξα τη Jemma Press.

Επομένως, θα συνεχίσουμε να βλέπουμε σε τακτά διαστήματα το KRAK;

Αν όλα πάνε καλά, ναι. Τώρα θα βγει το καινούργιο τεύχος, μετά, απ’ όσο έχουμε προγραμματίσει, πάμε για Δεκέμβριο και, την Άνοιξη, για το Comicdom Con, ετοιμάζουμε το #9.

Μπορείς να μας πεις δυο λόγια για το KRAK #7;

Στο #7 υπάρχει, όπως πάντα η κεντρική ιστορία του HARD ROCK, η δεύτερη από τις τρεις ιστορίες που έχουν να κάνουν με στρατό. Είναι και λίγο πιο ζόρικη η φάση που περνά ο Μάρκος στο στρατό, καθώς πηγαίνει σε ένα νησί στην παραμεθόριο, με τρελαμένους αξιωματικούς που νομίζουν ότι θα γίνει πόλεμος ανά πάσα στιγμή και χαίρονται για αυτό. Υπάρχουν και οι συνηθισμένες ιστοριούλες – ο Κ.ΟΜΙΣΤΑΣ, ο χαρακτήρας που εμφανίστηκε στο προηγούμενο τεύχος, ο Fanboy, και το GREEK COMICS WONDERWORLD.

Για πόσο καιρό ακόμη σκοπεύεις να συνεχίσεις το HARD ROCK; Έχεις κάποιο τέλος κατά νου;

Θα το συνεχίσω όσο μπορώ. Όσο μπορώ και όσο αρέσει στον κόσμο – γιατί είναι και αυτό ένα σημαντικό στοιχείο, να ακούμε οι δημιουργοί τους αναγνώστες και να μην κάνουμε μόνο του κεφαλιού μας. Υπάρχουν, φυσικά, και στιγμές που μπορούμε να κάνουμε του κεφαλιού μας, αλλά από τη στιγμή που κάνουμε comics και θέλουμε να τα διαβάσει κάποιος, μετράει πολύ η γνώμη τους, σίγουρα. Και, βέβαια, όσο το επιτρέπει η κατάσταση που επικρατεί αυτή τη στιγμή στην Ελλάδα

Τέλος για το HΑRD ROCK, δεν έχω. Ίσα-ίσα που συνεχώς μου έρχονται καινούργια storylines. Ειδικά τώρα που τελειώνω με το στρατό και είμαι σε άλλη φάση.

Τον τελευταίο καιρό έχεις και διαδικτυακή παρουσία, στο blog The Very Closed Circle. Έχεις κάποιo συγκεκριμένo θέμα στα όσα δημοσιεύεις εκεί ή απλά αυτοσχεδιάζεις κάθε φορά;

Βασικά, στα πρώτα πιανόμουν από άλλα strips που διάβαζα εκεί και έφτιαχνα κάτι. Στα τρία-τέσσερα τελευταία είναι δύο κεντρικοί χαρακτήρες κι εκεί αυτοσχεδιάζω.

Εκτός των άλλων, διαθέτεις και διδασκαλική εμπειρία στον τομέα των comics, σωστά;

Περίπου. Δεν είναι ακριβώς στον τομέα των comics, αλλά είναι ένα εργαλείο που χρειάζεται σε κάποιον που θα κάνει comics.

Ποια είναι τα βασικά “μαθήματα” που θέλεις να διδάξεις σε επίδοξους κομίστες;

Να διαβάσει πολλά comics. Αυτό θα μπορούσε να είναι μια συμβουλή. Αν θέλει να κάνει comics θα πρέπει να διαβάσει και πολλά comics.

Έχεις και δύο εκκρεμότητες με τους πιστούς αναγνώστες σου: το strip ΟΛΑ ΕIΝΑΙ ΚΟΜΙΚΞΣ και ένα comic που ετοίμαζες για την περασμένη Άνοιξη για τις εκδόσεις Tilt. Θα δούμε (ή ξαναδούμε) κάτι από αυτά σύντομα;

Κοίτα, αυτό με τις εκδόσεις Tilt έχει μείνει πίσω, διότι έχω “πλακωθεί” τώρα με το KRAK. Φαντάσου, μέχρι το Μάρτιο έχω να ετοιμάσω πόσες σελίδες. Οπότε, είναι αρκετά δύσκολο να ετοιμαστεί μέχρι τότε, αλλά δεν ξεχνιέται. Υπάρχουν μερικές έτοιμες σελίδες και είναι και μια ιστορία που ήθελα να τη βγάλω.

Τι θα είναι αυτό περίπου; Μπορείς να μας πεις;

Θα είναι, φαντάσου κάτι σαν το HARD ROCK, στο ίδιο στιλ, αλλά θα είναι ιστορία τρόμου.

Όσον αφορά στο ΟΛΑ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΚΟΜΙΚΞΣ, αυτό δυστυχώς είναι λίγες σελίδες – δηλαδή, τα επεισόδια που είχα κάνει, μαζί με αυτά που είχαν απορριφθεί, ήταν γύρω στα 14 με 15, δηλαδή μιλάμε για 30 σελίδες – επομένως δεν αξίζει να κυκλοφορήσει σε μια έκδοση. Εγώ, φυσικά, θα ήθελα να το συνεχίσω, να βρω ένα Μέσο για να το “υιοθετήσει” και να το δημοσιεύει, αλλά, δυστυχώς, στην παρούσα κατάσταση, πολύ λίγα έντυπα δέχονται comics, δίνοντας μια αμοιβή στο δημιουργό. Εδώ, πριν, στα “καλά” χρόνια σχεδόν δε γινόταν κάτι τέτοιο. Αλλά δεν ξέρω – μπορεί να το ενσωματώσω στο KRAK, υπάρχουν και αυτές οι σκέψεις.

Άλλα σχέδια έχεις κατά νου για το άμεσο μέλλον;

Όχι. Είμαι αφοσιωμένος στο ΚRAK. Πάντα, φυσικά, ψάχνω να κάνω κι άλλα πράγματα, όσο το επιτρέπει ο ελεύθερος χρόνος μου, αλλά όσον αφορά στα άμεσα σχέδια, πάλι θα πω για την κατάσταση στην οποία βρισκόμαστε τώρα, γιατί είναι δύσκολο να πεις ότι όλο τον επόμενο χρόνο θα κάνεις κάτι συγκεκριμένο, γιατί δεν ξέρεις τι σου ξημερώνει και πού θα βρίσκεσαι.

Many people may think that it’s easy to depict reality in a story. Maybe it is. Still, to create an everyday story that will be interesting for a large group of readers, while managing to maintain their interest not for weeks or months, but for entire years, now that is definitely a very tough mission. In fact, it’s even tougher if you consider that you’ve made the hard choice of introducing your story to one of the most demanding of genres, the genre of humor!

Luckily though, there are people who make this seem like it’s a piece of cake, and one of them is this week’s guest, Tasos Maragkos. With KRAK COMICS (whose seventh issue is out today in comic shops and bookstores) he has managed to draw us into an ordinary story, which isn’t all that much based in over-the-top circumstances or outrageous dialogues so as to be interesting or funny. I’m talking specifically about HARD ROCK, the story that occupies the largest page space of each KRAK issue and recounts situations that each and every one of us has more or less experienced on our own.

At the same time, KRAK issues contain smaller stories which allow the creator to run loose when it comes to the dosage of ordinary life stuff he’s called upon to include. The strip K. OMISTAS and GREEK COMICS WONDERWORLD are, in addition, even more “venomous”, in the spirit of some of Maragkos’ earlier works before and alongside KRAK KOMIKS. I’m referring to the fanzine (now published under the banner of Ennati Diastasi) called BIG BANG! COMICS,, as well as Maragkos’ other past works that we’ve read in anthologies, magazines, newspapers and expos. One that stands out among them is SUPER CONDOM, the artist’s contribution to the AT THE DRIVE INK anthology, and also EVERYTHING IS KOMIKCS, the strip that was published in the magazine 9 offered with the newspaper Eleftherotypia’s Wednesday paper. In that strip, Maragkos would mess with actualities, but unfortunately the suspension of the magazine’s publication didn’t allow us to enjoy more of his strips.

No matter, though. This year is quite bountiful when it comes to the doses in which we can consume the works of Tasos Maragkos. First of all, two issues of KRAK KOMIKS have been released, while a third one is also due for a release. Moreover, the creator participates in the blog called The Very Closed Circle, where we can see (although more rarely) some small strips with his name on them. And naturally, he’s got other projects in the pipeline, which will be realized when his schedule will allow it.

So, read on the following interview of this week’s guest, Tasos Maragkos (or alternatively, scroll down to the end of the interview to listen to it), and find out what he told us about KRAK KOMIKS and his future plans:

Like many other Greek creators, you’ve also been through the period of self-publishing. What have you gained from that experience, and why did you finally try out your luck with publishing houses?

I believe that every comic creator must go through self-publishing or the fanzine stage, because he’s got plenty to gain, plenty of experiences, ranging from running to festivals, handing out his comic book, and generally struggling from the beginning of its creation until he delivers it to the reader.

This means that he gets to take lessons?

Many lessons, yeah.

And when is the time to stop self-publishing?

I don’t know what time that may be. It might work out for you; therefore you can keep doing it. The reason I stopped self-publishing was because there weren’t any money to keep me publishing my own comic book and distribute it throughout Greece, in bookstores etc. It was very difficult.

So, there are more options in working with a publishing house?

With a publishing house, yeah, I managed to unload a lot of burden off my back. I mean, I’m still the one that makes it, I send it to them, and they get to do the rest.

Up to what degree do the stories and strips of KRAK KOMIKS contain autobiographical elements?

Not to a large degree. Of course, this depends on the issue. Issue # 1, for example, has many autobiographical elements. From there on, I base my stories on certain things and certain situations I’ve experienced myself, although I do cook them up completely. Not all things that have happened in the stories of HARD ROCK are real.

In what extend should we take seriously all that stuff you’ve been writing in the K.OMISTAS and GREEK COMICS WONDERWORLD strips? Do they have any truth in them, or are they just plain fun?

Basically, both. Some stories are simply fun, some others might have a little truth in them. However, it’s up to anybody to judge how seriously he’s going to take them, and it’s up to anybody to make something out of a story after he reads it.

Has anyone ever been bothered?

No, I’ve never heard of anything like that, but I don’t think that somebody should be bothered. I’d like to know it if they did, though…

There aren’t many over-the-top elements or unusual circumstances in HARD ROCK, yet the story is always interesting and the humor is abundant. How do you manage to do that with such a basically “ordinary” story?

What if I told you I have no idea? Look, basically – I mean, you can tell – HARD ROCK is largely influenced by Peter Bagge’sHATE . When I read HATE for the very first time (I can’t recall if it was in 2004 or 2005), I said to myself that I want to do a comic book just like that. And I just wrote the stories. Of course, I did think that you can’t write a story about you going to the supermarket, and then you came back home, and that’s it – something has to be going on in the story, whether it’s funny or not.

Which were the reasons behind the transfer of KRAK KOMIKS from Giganto Books to Jemma Press?

Tasos (ed: he means Tasos Papaioannou, publisher of Giganto) and I were getting along perfectly, and we still do, it’s just that I wanted an upgrade (for lack of a better word). I wanted more issues out each year, a better distribution. We talked about it with Tasos and realized that Giganto couldn’t pull through with something like that, so I chose Jemma Press.

So this means that we will still get to see KRAK regularly?

If it all works out, yeah, I guess. The new issue is going to be released soon, and after that, from what we’ve scheduled, the next one should be out in December, and #9 will be out in the spring, just in time for Comicdom Con.

Can you tell us a few words about KRAK #7?

Issue #7 includes, as always, the main story HARD ROCK, the second out of the three stories dealing with the army. This time, what Markos goes through in the army is a bit harder, since he’s dispatched to an island at the borders, featuring crazed officers who think there’ll be a war any minute now and they’re glad about it. Then you have the usual stories, like K. OMISTAS, the character that appeared in the previous issue, Fanboy, and GREEK COMICS WONDERWORLD.

For how long do you plan on continuing with HARD ROCK? Do you have an ending in mind?

I’ll keep doing it as long as I can. As long as I can, and as long as people still like it, because that too is very important, to get to listen to our readers and not just do things because we’ve thought them up and think they’re cool. Naturally, there are times when we are allowed to do just that, but since we’re making comics and we want somebody to read them, their opinion definitely counts for a lot. And, of course, as long as the overall situation in Greece allows me to keep doing them.

I don’t have an ending in mind for HARD ROCK. Quite the opposite actually, I keep having ideas for new storylines, especially now that I’m finishing up with the army and moving up to a whole new level.

Lately, you also have an online presence in The Very Closed Circle blog. Do you have a specific topic in what you publish there, or do you just improvise every time?

Basically, at first I was influenced by the other strips I’d read on the blog and I’d make something up in the same vein. But, three of the four recent strips have two central characters and that’s where I improvise.

Other than everything else, you also have teaching experience in the field of comics, am I right?

Kinda. It’s not exactly in the field of comics, but it’s a tool that any aspiring comic book artist will need.

Which are the “basic lessons” you want to teach to aspiring comic book artists?

Reading a lot of comics. This could be an advice. If somebody wants to make comics, then the have to read a lot of comics.

You also have some unfinished business with your faithful readers: The strip EVERYTHING IS KOMIKCS, and also a comic you were working on last spring for Tilt publications. Will we see (or will we see again) any of them anytime soon?

Look, we’re a bit behind schedule with Tilt publications, because right now I’m all too consumed with KRAK. Imagine how many pages I’ve got to have ready until March. So, it’s very difficult to have another comic out in the meantime, but I haven’t forgotten about it. There are some pages ready, and it’s a story I‘d like to release.

What will that be like? Can you tell us?

Imagine something like HARD ROCK, in the same vein, but it’ll be a horror story. As far as EVERYTHING IS KOMICS is concerned, this is unfortunately only a few pages long, I mean all the episodes I had done, along with those that had been rejected, were about 14 or 15 – this means that the whole thing is 30 pages long. As a consequence, I don’t think it’s worth releasing it as an individual publication. Naturally, I would like to keep on doing it, find a Medium to “adopt” it and publish it, but unfortunately in the current state of things there are very few printed media which accept comics and pay their creator. It was altogether difficult to do this during the “good” years. Still, I don’t know, maybe I’ll just integrate it in KRAK, I’ve thought of that as well.

Do you have any other plans in mind for the immediate future?

No. I’m devoted to KRAK. Of course, I am searching for new things to do, as long as my spare time allows it, but when it comes to immediate plans I’ll once again mention the state we’re in at the moment, because it’s difficult to say that next year I’ll be doing something specific, due to the fact that you don’t know what each new day will bring, nor where you’ll be when it comes.
