INTERVIEW CORNER #86: Comicdom Press Special

Μπορείς να μας περιγράψεις το INDIGO;

Σε αυτό μοιράζεσαι με άλλους τα συγγραφικά καθήκοντα. Μπορείς να μας μιλήσεις για αυτές τις συνεργασίες;

Έχει κάποια ιδιαίτερη σημασία ο τίτλος ΙΝDIGO;

Το είχα συνεχώς στο μυαλό μου για μερικές εβδομάδες, ώσπου μια μέρα, ενώ ζωγράφιζα, άκουγα για χιλιοστή φορά το THE POT, ένα από τα πιο αγαπημένα μου κομμάτια από τους Tool και συγκεκριμένα το ρεφρέν “Now you’re weeping shades of cozened indigo” και μου ήρθε…

Δουλεύεις σε κάτι άλλο αυτόν τον καιρό; Τι άλλο να περιμένουμε από εσένα στο μέλλον;

Μπορείς να μας πεις δυο λόγια για το ΓΡΑΦΟΝΤΑΣ ΜΕ ΕΙΚΟΝΕΣ και τον σκοπό του;

Σε ποιους απευθύνεται;

Τα “μαθήματα” του ΓΡΑΦΟΝΤΑΣ ΜΕ ΕΙΚΟΝΕΣ παρουσιάζονται μέσω εικονογραφήσεων και διδακτικών strips. Τι πλεονεκτήματα προσφέρει αυτό το format;

Ως συνδημιουργός ενός τέτοιου βιβλίου και έμπειρος καλλιτέχνης στο χώρο των comics, ποιο είναι το πρώτο πράγμα που θα συμβούλευες κάποιον που θέλει να μάθει να… γράφει με εικόνες;

Δουλεύεις σε κάτι άλλο αυτόν τον καιρό; Να περιμένουμε κάτι δικό σου στο εγγύς μέλλον;

Πώς θα περιέγραφες – σε κάποιον που δε γνωρίζει τη σειρά – το graphic novel, ΣΥΝΔΡΟΜΟ: Η ΑΡΧΗ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΤΟ ΤΕΛΟΣ;

Πόσο θεωρείς ότι εξελίχθηκε το σχέδιό σου από την εποχή του ΣΥΝΔΡΟΜΟ #1;

Ποιες ήταν οι προκλήσεις στην εικονογράφηση του ΣΥΝΔΡΟΜΟ: Η ΑΡΧΗ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΤΟ ΤΕΛΟΣ;

Κάθε τεύχος της σειράς σχεδιάστηκε και από έναν διαφορετικό καλλιτέχνη. Θεωρείς πως είναι ευκολότερο ή δυσκολότερο να σχεδιάσεις χαρακτήρες που αποδόθηκαν πρώτα από κάποιους άλλους;

Δουλεύεις σε κάτι άλλο αυτή την εποχή; Τι άλλο να περιμένουμε από εσένα στο μέλλον;

Μπορείς να μας περιγράψεις το νέο σου comic;

Γιατί ΠΟΛΥΣΠΟΡΟ;

Είναι τελικά δυνατόν να συνδυάσει κάποιος σε τέτοιο βαθμό τον παραλυτικό τρόμο με το αβυσσαλέο χιούμορ ή απλά μας κοροϊδεύεις;

Θεωρείς πως οι ήρωες σου έχουν υπαρξιακά προβλήματα και, αν ναι, πού οφείλονται αυτά;

Δουλεύεις σε κάτι άλλο αυτή την εποχή; Να περιμένουμε κάτι δικό σου στο εγγύς μέλλον;

English

Comicdom Con Athens 2012 is now just a few days away, and I figured that the best way to prepare from this column is to chat with four Greek creators who’ll be presenting their new works during those days. We already got a small taste regarding this year’s Con last Tuesday, with Mike Carey’s interview, one of the event’s international guests, and today, we’ll get to know four Greek creators a little better.

What this week’s four guests (Valia Kapadai, Christos Martinis, Michalis Dialynas and Gabriel Tombalidis) all have in common is that they are releasing four new comics through Comicdom Press and given that I’m able to move some strings and have the ability to show their intentions a few days before the Con, they provide answers to my questions concerning their new comics, as well as their other plans in the following interviews. But first, a few words about themselves.

INDIGO is the first Greek release by Valia Kapadai, who has participated in various anthologies abroad and has quite a few self-published works under her belt. She is currently illustrating four graphic novels for Marcosia and Scar Comics and also participates in IDW’s anthology called WOMANTHOLOGY.

Her life is split between her morning job as graphic designer for the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and her greatest passion, which is comics.

Christos Martinis has contributed his artwork in comics published by the Greek publishers Psyches Ta Lampyrismata and Jemma Press. He has also contributed in illustrating a collectible card game and also the flash game KOLOBOK 2012 (more about this below).

Other than the graphic novel SYNDROMO: THE BEGINNING IS THE END, he has also drawn the first issue of the SYNDROMO series, while his graphic novel THE LAST RESORT for Jemma Press will make its debut in Comicdom Con Athens 2012.

Michalis Dialynas is the creator of TRINKETS and SWAN SONGS. He has published his own works, such as A RECKLESS ADVENTURE OF A PENIS-HEADED HORSE and THE SNEAKY STORIES OF SNITCH & SNATCH, while he has participated in dozens of works in magazines, newspapers and anthologies. Moreover, he has also worked abroad in IDW’s GHOSTBUSTERS: DISPLACED AGGRESSION, in Image’s POPGUN and more recently in DARK HORSE PRESENTS, illustrating the story AMALA’S BLADE.

WRITING WITH IMAGES isn’t Dialynas’s first children-oriented work. During these last few months, he actively taught children-oriented workshops in comics and narration by Comicdom Press, which formed the foundations for WRITING WITH IMAGES.

Gabriel Tombalidis has just concluded the third part of his trilogy called THE MULTISEED DOUGH FROM HELL. This trilogy was fist established two years ago in Comicdom Con Athens 2010 with the 3 UNDEAD BASTARDS, the framework was laid down during last year’s Con with the SAGA OF THE MERCILESS SCUM, and this year will witness the finishing paintjob to the whole structure with the release of the MULTISEED DOUGH FROM HELL.

Naturally, other than his horror trilogy, Tobalidis has signed and delivered dozens of other works: In expos both in Greece and abroad, in TV animations, in the KA-POW anthology, which he self-published, and also in SYNDROMO #3, which he illustrated.

So, let’s see what this week’s four guests have to say about their new comics:

Valia Kapadai (INDIGO)

Can you give us a description of INDIGO?

INDIGO is a collection of several short stories which I illustrated starting with my return in comics, back in 2008, until the present. Most of them have already been published in foreign anthologies and also in the TWISTED VISION anthology, which I had self-published, while one of these stories has never before been published. The first story, “Versions of Violence”, is brand new, exclusively written for INDIGO, and serves as some kind of introduction to what is to come. Other than the stories, the final pages of INDIGO also include several pin-ups, all illustrated by me.

In this release, you stories are co-scripted with others. Can you tell us about these collaborations?

Although I have scripted several short stories, I don’t consider myself a “writer” and I guess I like it more when I’m illustrating other people’s stories. Especially if the writers are such exceptional and talented individuals as are Chris, Richard, Ollie, Elias and Panos. I’m very proud for each and every one of these collaborations and each story holds is exceptionally important to me. There are future plans for more stories with some of them, while as far as the others go, I hope I’ll soon be given the opportunity to work with them once more.

How different was your approach to each one of these stories? I noticed that there are smaller or larger differences in your drawing in proportion to each story.

When I read (or think about) a script, I automatically get “images” in my head. Depending on the story, these images are completely different to each other. When I start drawing, I’m not really giving any thought in selecting the materials. In addition, I like to experiment with various techniques, especially when it comes to how one can apply color. Aquarelles, in particular, when combined with other materials can produce totally different results. Also, there are other times when I’ve read a comic I liked and I end up being influenced by the style of the artists that drew it. Same goes with when I’ve seen a movie or a videoclip. More rarely, writers have made suggestions about how they would like their story to be. The emotional state in which I’m in is also reflected in the images I draw. I think that I absorb all the stimuli that I receive and bring them out on paper in a different manner, much like everyone else. Drawing comics is like a giant playground and I feel that trying out as many “toys” as you can just makes it more pleasant and fun.

Does INDIGO, as a title, hold any particular importance?

Truth is it was very difficult for me to come down with a fitting title for the anthology. I asked Elias’ help, who had a few very good ideas, but something wouldn’t fit. I kept it constantly in my mind for a few weeks until one day, I heard THE POT for the thousandth time while drawing, which is one of my most favorite songs by Tool, and especially the chorus “Now you’re weeping shades of cozened indigo”… and it just came to me in a flash! Indigo is one of my favorite colors, while it is also connected with some paranormal activity, something that fitted perfectly with the stories. When I suggested it to Elias he agreed and the title was thus found.

Are you working on something else at present? What else should we wait from you in the future?

Right now my life is full of comics!

There’ll be two graphic novels in 2012 which I have illustrated for Markosia: WHITE KNUCKLE (script by Cy Dethan, lettering by Nic Wilkinson) and KINDRED SPIRITS (scripted and penciled by Madga Levinovits). I also participate in the anthologies BAYOU ARCANA (scripted by Jimmy Pearson), URBAN LEGENDS (scripted by Steven Stone), also for Markosia, WOMANTHOLOGY (scripted by Mandy McMurray) by IDW and 2OMBIES (script by Lee Robson) by AccentUK.

I’ll soon begin work on the next graphic novels, SNOW (script by Richard McAuliffe/Publisher: Markosia) and SEEING SHADOWS (script by Chris Barker/ Publisher: Scar Comics).

Also, my immediate future holds another collaboration with Cy Dethan, while later on, if all goes well, my plans include collaborations with Pavlos Pavlidis and Luke Foster, Sissy Pantelis and Elias Katirtzigianoglou.

As far as self-publications are concerned, I hope that the first 2-3 issues of the MEDINA’S NINE LIVES series will be released in 2012 (script, pencils and inks by Magda Levinovits), and the same goes for Λ (Script by Lee Grice, pencils and inks by Pavlos Pavlidis) where I’ll be the colorist and also DREAMCATCHER (script by Mo Ali) where I’ll be handling all illustrations. I wish I had time to do more!

Michalis Dialynas (WRITING WITH IMAGES)

Can you tell us a few words about WRITING WITH IMAGES and its purpose?

It’s based on the workshops that Vasileia Vaxevani and I teach recently in schools, Museums etc. They go by the same name. Its purpose is to familiarize children with comics and mostly narration, to learn how to tell stories using the strength of the image. We want to cultivate creative thought in their minds and teach them how to do things, yet we want to do all that in a fun way. This is a book that will prepare future creators, as well as future comic readers.

Who is this book meant for?

It is meant for children of all ages, as well as parents and educators, not to mention all those seeking first contact with the language of comics. It’s a book that’s both fun and “educative”.

The “lessons” in WRITING WITH IMAGES are presented through illustrations and instructional strips. What are the advantages of this format?

Activity books are very common, at least abroad. I had plenty of those growing up – mostly Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stuff – and these books made me turn towards comics. I believe that comics have a language that is familiar to children and that they can turn any sort of lesson into a game.

As the co-creator of such a book and an experienced artist in the field of comics, what would be the first advice towards someone who wants to… write with images?

Use images in a clear and communicative manner. As we say in the lessons, you don’t have to draw well if you want to create comics. This comes with time and with practice. What’s important is to be able to say a clear story and to use images with this precise purpose in mind.

Are you working on something else at the moment? Should we expect any works in the near future?

DARK HORSE PRESENTS just released the second part of AMALA’S BLADE. The story concludes in the following month. I’ll be contributing with a short story (G. Mylonogiannis has done one of the central stories) in the second volume of SPERA that will be released by Archaia during this summer. There are some projects in the works, mostly for abroad, and I hope that I’ll soon be able to announce them. At the same time, I’m also working on a personal project.

Christos Martinis (SYNDROME: THE BEGINNING IS THE END)

How would you describe – to someone who’s not familiar with the series – the graphic novel SYNDROME: THE BEGINNING IS THE END?

SYNDROME consists of four (or should I say… five) very particular individuals who have lived in isolation for periods of time, or even for the biggest part of their lives, due to their unique abilities; now, these individuals finally get together because of these abilities. We saw how that came to be in the four preceding issues, and in THE BEGINNING IS THE END, we’ll get to say what happens from that point onwards.

In your opinion, to what degree has your drawing abilities evolved since SYNDROME #1?

During the years between SYNDROME #1 and THE BEGINNING IS THE END I’ve learned that the story should be a higher priority than serving my personal style and I believe that this is what brought this evolution.

Which were the challenges you’ve faced in illustrating SYNDROME: THE BEGINNING IS THE END?

SYNDROME is about characters and their interrelationships, this is why it’s full of dialogues that require an analogous share of directing and character performance. The biggest challenge (and the main reason why I wanted to work on THE BEGINNING IS THE END) was finding the movements, the expressions and the poses that would make each of these five characters real and unique.

Each issue of the series was drawn by a different artist. Do you believe that it is easier or harder to draw characters that were first rendered by others?

I believe that it is impossible to come up with a different personal style working on a style that has already been set by someone else. This is why Elias and I had agreed that I should work straight from the photographs that Yannis, Gabriel and Alexia had worked on, and that I should remain focused on the models they had used before.

Are you currently working on something else? What else should we expect from you in the future?

I’m busy with promoting LAST RESORT, my personal graphic novel, freshly released by Jemma Press and I’m also working on the final details of a flash game called KOLOBOK 2012 (a dark re-imagining of a Slavonic myth) in collaboration with Temple Darkness (you can find more details a href=”www.templedarkness.com/kolobok/” target=”_blank”>here). I’ve written a script that is currently illustrated by Spiros Pantazis (you can find some of his penciling work here), and I’m also working on a collection along with Yannis Katsikarelis and Spyros Pantazis, as well as yet another graphic novel that looks like it will reach 100 pages. I’m hoping that it’ll be completed by the next Comicdom Con Athens in 2013.

Gabriel Tobalides (THE MULTISEED DOUGH FROM HELL)

Can you describe us your new comic?

It would require whole volumes to put in words the deep philosophical meanings included in this story. Let’s just say that it is primarily an essay on the fear of death. It’s much like waking up drenched in sweat on a hot summer afternoon and finding that someone has spread breadcrumbs on the bed.

Why the MULTISEED angle?

Because it’s low on proteins, rich in vitamins and entirely non-fattening. Mostly, though, because it’s a dough from hell, and a dough from hell can’t be an ordinary, run-of-the-mill dough.

Is it finally possible for someone to combine paralyzing terror and abysmal humor to such an extent, or are you just making asses of ourselves?

I’d prefer “abysmal terror with paralyzing humor”, but I see what you mean. If you examine the sum of these three comics and ponder on what unites them all, I believe you’ll have your answer.

Do you believe that your heroes suffer from existential angst and if so, what is the source of this angst?

They got tons of existential angst and that’s largely because of my own issue-ridden character.

Are you presently working on something else? Should we wait something else from you in the near future?

There won’t be anything else in the vein of the MULTISEED DOUGH. When I started with the 3 UNDEAD BASTARDS, I had in my mind the trilogy that is concluded this year (3 UNDEAD BASTARDS, THE SAGA OF THE MERCILESS SCUM and the MULTISEED DOUGH FROM HELL). I plan on taking up something entirely different that the above, more different than even SYNDROME. I can’t say if that’ll be in the near future because it takes a lot of preparation and even more work. But we’ll talk about it when the time comes. Thank you very much.
