Thijs van Nimwegen

Τί είναι η Platform Spartak και ποιός ο ρόλος σου σε αυτή;

Η οργάνωση υπάρχει εδώ και εννέα χρόνια. Ποιοί από τους στόχους της έχουν ήδη εκπληρωθεί και ποιοι εξακολουθούν να αποτελούν προκλήσεις για το μέλλον;

Με όλα αυτά τα προγράμματα και τις δραστηριότητες, είχες την ευκαιρία να συναντήσεις πολλούς νέους από χώρες σε όλη την ήπειρο. Τί πιστεύεις για το πλήθος στερεοτύπων που ακολουθούν τις εθνικές ταυτότητες; Υπάρχει κάποιο ίχνος αλήθειας σε αυτά, και αν ναι, σε ποιο βαθμό;

Μπορείς να μας πεις περισσότερα για το Comixiade, το διεθνές δίκτυο καλλιτεχνών που επικεντρώνεται στις εικονογραφημένες αφηγήσεις και τα comics;

To πρόγραμμα αποτελεί μέρος της θεματικής  “Narratives for Europe” του European Cultural Foundation, με το ECF στο Άμστερνταμ να είναι κύριος χορηγός μας.

Πώς προέκυψε η ιδέα να συνδυαστεί μία ολλανδική ιστορία από τον Μεσαίωνα με τη δημιουργία comics, για το “Everyman”;

Τώρα που το “Everyman” ολοκληρώθηκε, ποιό θα έλεγες ότι ήταν το μεγαλύτερο επίτευγμα του προγράμματος;

Πιστεύεις ότι η μεγαλύτερη πρόκληση κατά τη διάρκεια ενός προγράμματος ανταλλαγής νέων είναι οι δυναμικές που αναπτύσονται εντός της ομάδας;

Θα μπορούσες να μας δώσεις περισσότερες πληροφορίες για τα μέχρι τώρα comics related projects της Platform Spartak, καθώς και για τα μελλοντικά;

Thijs van Nimwegen

Those of you who have read the first part of this article, already know  that Comicdom Press represented Greece in the “Everyman” youth exchange program held in Roden, The Netherlands, which brought together comics creators from the four corners of Europe. In the second and final part, you can read an interview with the production manager, Thijs van Nimwegen, who introduces us to the activities of Platform Spartak, organizers of the program.

What is Platform Spartak and what’s your role in it?

Platform Spartak started out as a branch of the Groningen history students club, but it’s now an independent, interdisciplinary platform for anybody interested in Eastern Europe. We have our office in The Hague, the Netherlands. Our main goal is bringing together young Europeans from all parts of the continent, inside and outside of the EU. We do this by stimulating the formation of underground cultural networks in various disciplines, such as music (STREETS festivals) and comics (Comixiade).

My role within Spartak is mainly as a producer of various projects, mainly Comixiade, as a communication manager (I handle the website and the newsletter, for example), and occasionally as a designer and ICT-manager.

The organization has been functioning for nine years. Which of its goals have already been accomplished and which do you consider to be future challenges?

As a semi-professional organization, we have only been active for the last 3-4 years. I think we have achieved a start of our main goal: we now function as a sort of scene for young active European citizens, organizing cultural, social and intellectual projects together with many partner organizations in almost every European country. Our main challenge now is to further professionalize the organization and, more importantly, get more people to be active with us. Anybody can become active for Platforms Spartak at any time. This can be as an organizer, an exchange participant, a volunteer, writer or in numerous other ways.

In all these programs and activities, you had the chance to meet a lot of young people from countries all over the continent. What do you think of the several stereotypes that follow ethnic identities? Is there a trace of truth in any of them, and if so, to what extend?

I guess it depends on who you meet. I’ve met a lot people that exactly fit the national/ethnic stereotypes, and an equal lot that are the exact opposite, so it’s hard to find “the truth”. Of course, within Spartak we also often joke about the freewheeling Balkans or the rigid Germans, but I guess the only way to be fair is to deal with everybody on an individual basis. Which is what we try to do.

Could you tell us more about Comixiade, the international network of artists focusing on graphic narratives and comics?

Comixiade is one of the programs initiated by Platform Spartak, in cooperation with a number of organizations throughout Europe, most importantly Tranzyt in Poland, Club Elektrika in Serbia and the designer Malabedna (Aneta Bendakova) in the Czech Republic. It’s part of the European Cultural Foundation’s (ECF) “Narratives for Europe” theme. ECF (from Amsterdam) is also our main sponsor in this program. Comixiade explores the untold narratives of Europe – from the back alleys, docklands, slums etc. – in comic form. We did this through three comic jams in Poland, the Netherlands and Serbia, and additionally a number of artists worked from home. Currently we’re compiling all comics created in the last year and a half, into a book which will be published around the beginning of October 2012, ending Comixiade. Comic-themed projects will continue, though.

How did you come up with the idea of combining a dutch story from the Middle Ages with comics creation?

Actually, the Everyman story was known throughout Medieval Europe, even if mostly in the west. The idea to adapt it came from Michiel van de Weerthof and Paul de Vreede, my co-organizers responsible for the flow of the program and the content. We needed a theme that was not bound to one specific nation or ethnicity, that explored human nature and was still compact enough to adapt in the short time we have. Also, Everyman is a quite free and flexible theme, allowing the artists the maximum amount of freedom in their adaptation.

Now that the Everyman YE is over, which do you consider to be the greatest accomplishment of the program?

I would say that once again we have enlarged our underground comic artists/fans network, and hopefully inspired the partner organizations and participants to set up their own comic jams. I might add that I would be more then willing to help out with that, and of course have our organization be a partner in it.

Do you believe that group dynamics is the biggest challenge when organizing a Youth Exchange program?

It is one of the most important things to keep an eye on, yes – which is why I involved Michiel and Paul, who are great motivators with a feel for the atmosphere within the group. However, especially with a comic jam such as this, the quality of creative output is equally important. If you make it seem like the art created is only a tool for group dynamics, people will feel like their work is not taken seriously. So we are quite critical when it comes to that.

Could you provide us with further information on the comics related projects of Platform Spartak? (past, present and future)

Comixiade I described earlier. Before that, we had two other “loose” Youth Exchanges, one in Belgrade, Serbia, in 2009 (called Strip-It) and one in Haarlem, the Netherlands, in 2010 (called Migrating Comics). We still have a few copies of the publications made after those exchanges, so anybody interested can give us a shout.
From January 2013, Platform Spartak will receive a grant from the Culture Programme of the European Commission to implement a long-term project, with the working title “New European Underground”. This project aims to unite the earlier music and comics programs and built further upon our general “creating underground cultural networks” aim. Comic jams will most definitely be a part of that, although I can’t tell you how many and where yet. Keep an eye on platformspartak.eu.
