Η υπογραφή σου έχει μπει σε πολλά και διαφορετικά projects. Από προσωπικές δουλειές και αυτοεκδόσεις μέχρι εφημερίδες και διεθνείς ανθολογίες. Τι δυσκολίες έχεις συναντήσει σε κάθε περίπτωση και ποια από αυτές σημαίνει πιο πολλά για σένα;

Ποιοι είναι οι καλλιτέχνες που σε επηρέασαν;

Τι είναι αυτό που σε εμπνέει να γράψεις τις ιστορίες σου;

Έλα ντε.

Μπορείς να μας πεις δυο λόγια για τη διαδικασία που ακολουθείς, από την αρχική ιδέα μέχρι την ολοκλήρωση ενός comic;

Η πιο πρόσφατη δουλειά σου είναι το TRINKETS: Ένα Πατάρι Γεμάτο Ιστορίες. Μπορείς να μας πεις λίγα λόγια για αυτό;

Οι ιστορίες του TRINKETS γράφτηκαν σε διαφορετικά χρονικά διαστήματα, σωστά; Πώς και αποφάσισες να τις συνδέσεις και πώς εμπνεύστηκες τον τρόπο;

Έχεις προτιμήσει σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις να φτιάξεις comics στην αγγλική γλώσσα. Ακόμη και το TRINKETS που είναι στα ελληνικά, διαθέτει αγγλική μετάφραση. Για ποιο λόγο;

Χα!

Τι άλλο να περιμένουμε από εσένα στο άμεσο μέλλον;

English

After a two-week absence, due to Comicdom’s Top 20 Alan Moore Comics List, the Interview Corner column returns with a focus on the Greek scene and on one of its most admired representatives, Michael Dialynas.

A minor remark regarding the phrase “one of its most admired representatives”: I believe it is necessary, since I wanted to avoid using a plain cliché in order to introduce Michael. The truth of the matter is that I consider the abovementioned phrase to be 100% appropriate for the occasion, since I can’t recall ever hearing something bad about him, not even once, and despite the fact that my relations with the Greek comics scene aren’t the kind that would allow me to have a knowledge of many rumors and incidents, trust me in saying that I’ve heard a lot of gossips…

But none of these gossips concerned Michael Dialynas (which, of course, won’t really help with this post’s readership, but what can you do?). I don’t think that this is hard to explain. The few contacts I’ve had with him from time to time (mostly during the Comicdom Con periods) showed a relaxed and calm person, but mostly revealed someone who really loves what he is doing (you might say that all artists love what they are doing and I will agree with you –although not all of them demonstrate their love in a way that is full of intensity and free of mannerisms).

I also think that this is obvious from his comics. No matter how weird the story he is narrating, regardless of the fact that the heroes of the story are marching towards chaos or disaster, the manner in which he is telling the story and the distinct features of his pencils will neither upset nor stress you. His stories have a way to sooth you, and at the same time point out to you that their creator also cares for his protagonists.

It’s not just a few works here and there. He has released dozens of comics, in magazines, newspapers and anthologies such as 9, GALERA, PARASKEVI +13, MOV and BLAST COMICS (published by Giganto Press). He has also participated in LYNCH (an amazing collective project by Kapsimi Publications) and in international publications (such as POPGUN VOL.3 & 4 by Image and IDW’s GHOSTBUSTERS: DISPLACED AGGRESSION), while he also has several self-publications under his belt, such as A WILD ADVENTURE OF A PHALLUS-HEADED HORSE and THE SNEAKY STORIES OF SNITCH & SNATCH.

Lastly, this past spring he collected many of his mini comics (published and unpublished) in TRINKETS, a release by Comicdom Press. Let’s see what he has to say about all of the abovementioned facts, and much more:

You’ve participated in many and different projects, from personal works and self-publications to newspapers and international anthologies. What were the difficulties that you had to overcome in any given occasion, and which of these meant the most to you?

Well now, that’s a very long question to start with, you really don’t waste any time at all, Thomas. All comics mean something to me, but it’s true, I do show more love and care to my personal projects and self-publications. I like taking care of the production duties myself.

There were many difficulties, but I cannot say that they were anything other than the ordinary, such as finding how much time you can devote to a project, finding the money to print it, or, in the case of a webcomic, to create a webpage, and lastly, to find a story, one that will grab your attention and make you want to work at it, and also to make you want to share it with others.

Other than that, each and every project has its own beautiful difficulties. For TRINKETS, per example, I had to take many long walks around Athens, I had to search and make phone calls in order to find a neat and not-so-expensive way to bind the 100 special editions. I was looking around for strings, paper bags and fabric bags, wrapping paper, clay for the wolf mask etc. All these were like a new level in a videogame, both for me and for the completion of that book. I know that I’ll find new pleasant “difficulties” to deal with in the coming projects, and maybe sometime I’ll get to face against one of the Big Bosses, like Bowser in MARIO BROS.

Who were the artists that influenced you?

I can definitely say for sure that the three great and constant ones are Mike Mignola, Guy Davis and Manu Larcenett. Their books are in an easy to grab position in my bookshelf, although lately I’ve been rediscovering Nicola De Grecy, and I’m getting to know the duo Kerascoet (Marie Pommepuy and Sebastien Cosset). Nice things, all in all.

What inspires you to write your stories?

Beats me. This is a tough question, I never have anything specific in mind for inspiration, I mostly read short stories, look at various pictures and fables from all over the world. From there on, it’s all of matter of getting a hold on something in my personal life, something that intrigues me in order to build a new story around it. And let’s not forget that in times of hardship, Wikipedia helps you find the right ingredient you need to complete it.

Can you tell us a few words regarding the procedure you are following, from the conception of the original idea until the completion of a comic?

I’m posting somewhat frequently in my personal blog several stages of illustrations and comics, but regarding this particular question, a couple years back I’ve put up a post that analyzed the three-page “Non-Conventional” from start to finish. You can read it here.

Your most recent work is TRINKETS: AN ATTIC FULL OF STORIES. Can you tell us a few words about it?

It was a project I had in my mind for a very long time, I had collected over 200 pages in the last five years that I’ve been drawing comics, and I wanted to put them all together in a small album. I gathered them here and there, until it was time to go to San Diego last year, so I decided to bind 50+ pages from my comics and print them in 100 copies under the name TRINKETS.

The stories contained in TRINKETS were written in different occasions, right? How did you decide to connect them and how were you inspired to do it the way you did?

I felt the need to do something more than just a simple collection. At first, before I got stuck with the name TRINKETS, I had decided to name it THE WOODEN CROW AND OTHER STORIES. Basically, the idea with the objects was there from the beginning, but it concerned a much more complicated story. In the first edition there was a father, who was a collector, who would go on a walk each night past the frontiers of a Victorian post-apocalyptic city in the desert that surrounded it, and each night he would return carrying a sack with all the objects he would find. He would then use these objects to tell stories to his child before it would fall asleep. I had developed several sketches, but then I got stuck with Trink and with an attic full of stories.

In several occasions, you’ve chosen to create comics using the English language. Even TRINKETS, which is in Greek, has been translated to English. Which is the reason for that?

Ha! Now that’s an easy question! I stayed in London until I was 8, and English is my mother language. I generally write down all my stories in English at first, and then I translate them into Greek. It’s a bizarre procedure. I was afraid that some things would be lost in the translation from the “original” text, so that’s way I decided to have TRINKETS available in English as well –it’s a very important part of my stories.

What else can we expect form you in the immediate future?

Hmmm… that’s a very sneaky question! I’ve got 3-4 projects lying around scattered in my desk, some are ready and only need to be cooked, but some others need adding some spice and ingredients in order to come together. Nevertheless, I hope to have at least one finished in 2010, and the others will be completed at their own pace sometime in the next five years. You’ll be definitely told when their time will come!
