INTERVIEW CORNER #42: CCA 2011 Special!

Όπως και κάθε χρόνο, στο φετινό Comicdom Con Athens συγκεντρώθηκε, εκτός από πλήθος κόσμου, και η αφρόκρεμα (sic) της ελληνικής σκηνής των comics. Δεκάδες καλλιτέχνες και δημιουργοί είχαν την ευκαιρία να μιλήσουν με τον κόσμο, αλλά και μεταξύ τους, να σχεδιάσουν, να αφιερώσουν, να τρέξουν και να ξεκουραστούν. Όπως αποδείχθηκε, όμως, μέσα στις δουλειές που ανέλαβαν (χωρίς να το γνωρίζουν) να κάνουν ήταν και να κάνουν υπομονή μέχρι ο περίεργος τύπος που τους έβαζε το ψηφιακό recorder στα μούτρα να πάρει τις απαντήσεις του και να κυνηγήσει κάποιον άλλο.
Αυτός ο περίεργος τύπος ήμουν εγώ. Έχοντας αποφασίσει να συγκεντρώσω δηλώσεις από Έλληνες δημιουργούς που βρίσκονταν στο Con, ξεκίνησα από το πρωί της Κυριακής να κυνηγάω τους καλλιτέχνες με την απόχη, ανάμεσα στα signings τους, τις συζητήσεις τους και τις ελάχιστες ώρες χαλάρωσης που ενδεχομένως να είχαν. Για το λόγο αυτό, τους ευχαριστώ όλους για όσα μου είπαν και ζητώ συγγνώμη από όσους αμέλησα ή δεν κατάφερα να βρω ανάμεσα στις επίσης πολλές δικές μου υποχρεώσεις.
Στα πλαίσια, λοιπόν, της θεματολογίας της εβδομάδας που διανύουμε και είναι ολόκληρη Con related, σας παρουσιάζω τις απαντήσεις 14 Ελλήνων καλλιτεχνών στις σύντομες ερωτήσεις μου:

Όχι. Ή μάλλον… (μου δείχνει τη φράση της πρώτης σελίδας) ZX: συγκρούσεων γέννα τα συντρίμμια.
Ποιο ήταν το πιο διασκεδαστικό πράγμα που έκανες στο Con;
Να κάθομαι δίπλα στον Ρουμπούλια.
Τι αγόρασες;
Αγόρασα fanzines και αργότερα θα κάνω και μια βόλτα στα υπόλοιπα περίπτερα.

Όχι ακόμα.

Υπάρχει κάποιο νέο comic σου εδώ;
Βεβαίως, το MARS (εκδόσεις Ιn-k situ comix). Είναι φοβερό κομμάτι και νομίζω ότι είναι και κατάλληλο για το όλο σκηνικό εδώ, γιατί το Con κινείται αρκετά προς την αμερικάνικη σκηνή και το MARS αποτελεί και μια κριτική στην σκηνή αυτή – σε ένα συγκεκριμένο κομμάτι της βέβαια, γιατί υπάρχουν και πολύ όμορφα αμερικάνικα comics.
Μπορείς να το περιγράψεις με πέντε λέξεις;
Υπερηρωικό, σύγχρονο, ρεαλιστικό, επαναστατικό και γαμάτο.
Ποιο ήταν το πιο διασκεδαστικό πράγμα που έκανες στο Con;
Να “βρίζομαι” με τους πελάτες, βασικά, όταν μου κάνουν σχέδια. Και γενικά να κάνω κουβέντα. Είναι κάτι που το διασκεδάζω πολύ. Το “βρίζομαι” να το βάλεις σε εισαγωγικά.
Τι αγόρασες;
Καταρχάς αγόρασα όλα τα fanzines, γιατί έχουν αρχίσει και σπανίζουν. Φαίνεται πως κώλωσαν τα παιδιά και καλό είναι τους δίνουμε ένα σπρώξιμο – όχι πως τώρα εμείς είμαστε οι “μεγάλοι”, αλλά ούτως άλλως γουστάρουμε να βλέπουμε τι υπάρχει. Για να ξέρω και τι έρχεται μετά από εμένα – μη μου λένε μετά ότι δεν είπα τίποτα. Να προλάβω να βρίσω, να επαινέσω και να έχω κάποιο ενεργό ρόλο. Διάολε, γράφτηκα στην Ακαδημία των Awards, τι θα κάνω, απλά θα παριστάνω τον Ακαδημαϊκό;
Πήρα και άλλα comics από δημιουργούς που εκτιμώ. Τέτοιες δουλειές δεν τις χάνουμε και δεν κάνουμε εξυπνάδες του τύπου τα comics που ούτως ή άλλως θα πάρουμε να τα αφήνουμε για το απώτερο μέλλον – μια εξυπνάδα που την έκανα παλιότερο αλλά όχι πια, γιατί σοβάρεψα στοιχειωδώς.
Έχεις ξεκινήσει το επόμενό σου project;
Κοίτα, εγώ έχω έτοιμα δύο, αλλά το θέμα είναι ότι δεν υπάρχει σάλιο. Θα είχα βγάλει κι ένα δεύτερο αυτή τη στιγμή και υπάρχει κι ένα project, το οποίο θα είναι διαφορετικό. Θα είναι ένα comic που ασχολείται με τα παιχνίδια (card games, videogames κτλ.) και για αυτό θα έχει και παιχνίδια μέσα, θα είναι ιδιαίτερο.

Ναι, έχω δύο φέτος: το POPULART #3 και το NEUROTICA (Giganto), το οποίο έγινε σε συνεργασία με του My Wet Calvin.

Τι αγόρασες;
Δεν έχω αγοράσει ακόμα κάτι. Μου τα έχουν κάνει όλα δώρο από ανταλλαγές, αλλά θέλω να πάω πρώτα στα fanzines και μετά να πάρω ό,τι άλλο έμεινε από τριγύρω.
Έχεις ξεκινήσει το επόμενό σου project;
Αυτόν τον καιρό όχι, αλλά για του χρόνου υπάρχει μια σκέψη για μια ανθολογία από Έλληνες δημιουργούς.

Υπάρχει κάποιο νέο comic σου εδώ;
Όχι. Ας είναι καλά η μαμά πατρίδα. Έχω, όμως, ένα sketchbook (εκδόσεις Comicworld).
Μπορείς να το περιγράψεις με πέντε λέξεις;
Είναι πολύ υπέροχο και πρέπει πραγματικά να το αγοράσει ο κόσμος γιατί είναι ένα sketchbook σταθμός στην Ιστορία των sketchbooks.
Ποιο ήταν το πιο διασκεδαστικό πράγμα που έκανες στο Con;
Να σου κάνω την προηγούμενη δήλωση με παραπάνω από πέντε λέξεις.
Τι αγόρασες;
Τίποτα ακόμη, αλλά σήμερα που έφερα μαζί μου πάρα πολλά λεφτά (χιλιάδες ευρώ), θα πάρω πολλά.
Έχεις ξεκινήσει το επόμενό σου project;
Καταρχήν πρέπει να τελειώσω επιτέλους το ΤΑ ΧΡΟΝΙΚΑ ΤΟΥ ΔΡΑΚΟΦΟΙΝΙΚΑ και μετά βλέπουμε. Στο στρατό έγραψα πολλά σενάρια.

Θέλω να ξεκουραστώ λίγο και μετά να συνεχίσω ένα graphic novel που ετοιμάζω, σε συνεργασία με μια Αγγλίδα. Πρόκειται για ένα αυτοβιογραφικό comic που σχεδιάζω εγώ. Αλλά δεν ξέρω πότε θα είναι έτοιμο, γιατί το σενάριο είναι στη μέση.

Το δεύτερο τεύχος του SWAN SONGS (Comicdom Press) που περιέχει μια αυτοτελή ιστορία και αποτελεί κάπως τη συνέχεια του προηγούμενου. Ξεκαθαρίζει λίγο την κατάσταση της ιστορίας.
Μπορείς να το περιγράψεις με πέντε λέξεις;
Μαγεία, κόκκινο τέρας, σπαθιά, θάνατος.
Ποιο ήταν το πιο διασκεδαστικό πράγμα που έκανες στο Con;
Να κάθομαι έξω, να πίνω καφέ και να μη χρειάζεται να κάνω κάτι.
Τι αγόρασες;
Τώρα μόλις αγόρασα κάποια πράγματα από το περίπτερο της Giganto και το καινούργιο του Helm (ZX) και σε λίγο θα πάω και για τα υπόλοιπα.
Έχεις ξεκινήσει το επόμενό σου project;
Αυτή τη στιγμή ασχολούμαι με ένα short story που πρέπει να κάνω για τη συλλογή SPERA που θα κυκλοφορήσει από την εκδοτική Archaia και του χρόνου θα ετοιμάσω ένα ολόκληρο τεύχος για τη συγκεκριμένη εκδοτική.

Υπάρχουν δύο comics: το ΔΕΝ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΑΥΤΟ ΠΟΥ ΝΟΜΙΖΕΙΣ (Jemma Press) και το ΑΡΑΧΩΒΑ (εκδόσεις 9η Διάσταση) – και τα δύο μαζί με τον Παναγιώτη Πανταζή. Και συμμετέχω και σε ένα fanzine.

Δεν είναι αυτό που νομίζεις και δοκίμιο πάνω στην ανθρώπινη επικοινωνία.

Πήγα τον David Prudhomme να φάει χταπόδι. Ήταν όσο ωραίο ακούγεται. Και το χταπόδι ήταν ωραίο.
Τι αγόρασες;
Αγόρασα πολλά ελληνικά comics.
Έχεις ξεκινήσει το επόμενό σου project;
Ετοιμάζω μαζί με τον Θανάση Πέτρου ένα άλμπουμ, το οποίο ελπίζουμε να έχει βγει μέχρι τον Σεπτέμβριο. Μπορεί και νωρίτερα.

Όλα τα fanzines και τις περισσότερες ελληνικές κυκλοφορίες που δεν τις αγόρασα, αλλά μου έδωσαν στα πλαίσια των ανταλλαγών.
Ποιο είναι το επόμενό σου project;
Ο Τάσος γράφει το ΔΕΝ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΑΥΤΟ ΠΟΥ ΝΟΜΙΖΕΙΣ #2 και κάποια στιγμή θα συνεχίσω το COMMON COMICS, αλλά δεν ξέρω πότε και από ποια εκδοτική.

Το να κάνω σκίτσα, γιατί έχω ένα μήνα να σχεδιάσω.

Πολλά ελληνικά comics. Αφού είναι εδώ και οι δημιουργοί, είχα την ευκαιρία να τους ζητήσω και σχέδια.

Ναι, το NIGHT OF THE FALLING SKIES και μετά βλέπουμε.

Just like every other year, other than flocks of people, this year’s Comicdom Con Athens also managed to gather the crème de la crème (sic) of the Greek comics scene. Dozens of artists and creators had the chance to talk to people and to each other, to draw, dedicate, run around and just relax. But, as it was evidenced on the way, among the tasks that were assigned to them (albeit without their knowledge), they were also obliged to be patient while that weird guy stuck his digital recorder to their faces in order to collect his answers and move on to chase around someone else.
That weird guy was me. Having decided to collect statements from Greek creators attending the Con, I started chasing them around with a catcher in-between their Sunday morning signings, speeches, and the few hours of relaxation they were likely allowed to have. For this reason, I thank them all for all they’ve told me and I apologize to everyone I’ve neglected or didn’t manage to find as I was running around handling my own numerous assignments.
Therefore, in the context of this week’s subject which is all Con related, I hereby present you what 14 Greek artists answered to my questions:

Can you describe with five words?
No. Or maybe… (showing me the first page) ZX: Conflict is the mother of ruins.
What was the most fun thing you did while in Con?
Sitting next to Roumboulias.
What did you buy?
I bought fanzines and later on I’ll stroll around the other tables.
Have you started your next project?
Not yet.
Christos Stamboulis
Do you have a new comic book at the Con?
Sure thing, MARS (In-k situ comix publications).It is one hell of a piece and I also think that it is appropriate for the whole scenery in here, since Con is more about the American scene and MARS is a critique of that scene – of a specific section of that scene of course, because there are some very beautiful American comics.
Can you describe it in five words?
Superheroic, contemporary, realistic, revolutionary and fuckin’ awesome.
What was the most fun thing you did during the Con?
Trading one-liners with customers, basically, when they’re being somewhat rude. And chatting, in general. It’s something I really enjoy. You should put “trading one-liners” in quotes.
What did you buy?
First of all, I bought all the fanzines because they’ve started becoming a rarity. It seems that people chickened out and it’ll be good if we gave them a push, not because we’re “established” or something, but because we’re into seeing what’s out there anyhow. So that I’ll know what comes next after me, I don’t want to hear people telling that I didn’t say nothing. I want to have time to trade one-liners, praise, and have an active role. Hell, I enrolled in the Awards Academy, what am I supposed to do, just pretend I’m a scholar? I also got more comics from creators I appreciate, because we don’t miss these works and we’re not playing smart and go like I’m gonna buy these comics anyway, so I’ll just buy them later. This was a not-so-smart thing I used to do before but not anymore, I’ve become elementary wiser.
Have you started your next project?
Look, I’ve got two projects ready but I’m as broke as one can get. I would’ve released a second project, and there’s one more that going to be different. It’ll be a comic book about games (card games, videogames etc) and that’s the reason it’ll also include games in its format, it’ll be special.
Tasos Papaioannou
Do you have a new comic at the Con?
Yeah, this year I’ve got two: POPULART #3 and NEUROTICA (Giganto) which was done in collaboration with My Wet Calvin.
Can you describe each with only five words?
POPULART # 3: A collection of comics from expos and special issues. Plus, it also includes a sketchbook!
NEUROTICA: A comic book designed for a live performance by My Wet Calvin and was done in collaboration with them.
What was the most fun thing you did at the Con?
I got to meet Chris Ware!
What did you buy?
I haven’t bought anything yet. It’s all gifts from trading, but first I want to go to the fanzine section and then buy what’s left from around the tables.
Have you started your next project?
Not at the present, but there is a thought for the next year about doing an anthology of Greek creators.
Giannis Roumboulias
Do you have a new comic at the Con?
No. You should thank the Motherland for that. I do have a sketchbook, though (Comicworld editions).
Can you describe it using only five words?
It’s really awesome and people should really buy it, because it’s a milestone sketchbook in the History of sketchbooks.
What was the most fun thing you did during the Con?
That last statement using more than five words.
What did you buy?
Nothing yet, but today I’ve come loaded in cash (thousands of euros!) so I’ll buy lots of stuff.
Have you started your next project?
First of all, I ought to finally complete THE CHRONICLES OF THE DRAGONPHOENIX and then we’ll see. I wrote lots of scripts while in the army.

Is there a new comic book of yours at the Con?
Yeah, my very first one called COMICS & STUFF (Comicdom Press).
Can you describe it with only five words?
It has lots of stuff!
What was the most fun thing you did during the Con?
I think that would be participating in the judge panel of the Cosplay competition.
What did you buy?
I haven’t had time to buy anything yet.
Have you started your next project?
I want to just relax for a while and then continue doing a graphic novel I’m working on in collaboration with an English woman. It’s an autobiographical comic and I’m handling the drawing department. But I don’t know when it’ll be ready, because we’re still halfway in the script.

Michalis Dialynas
Do you have a new comic book at the Con?
The second issue of SWAN SONGS (Comicdom Press) that has a self-contained story and it’s somewhat of a sequel to the previous issue. It clarifies a little the whole situation of the story.
Can you describe it in just five words?
Magic, red monster, swords, death.
What was the most fun thing you did during the Con?
Sitting outside, drinking coffee and having no need to do anything whatsoever.
What did you buy?
I just bought some stuff from Giganto’s table and the new Helm release (ZX), and I’ll go pick up the rest in a while.
Have you started your next project?
At the moment I’m doing a short story for SPERA, a collection that will be published by Archaia, and next year I’ll be doing a full issue for that same publishing company.

Is there a new comic book of yours at the Con?
There are two comics: The IT’S NOT WHAT YOU THINK (Jemma Press) and ARACHOVA (Ennati Diastasi Publications), both done in collaboration with Panagiotis Pantazis. I’m also contributing to a fanzine.
Can you describe them in just five words?
It’s not what you think and an essay in human communication.
What was the most fun thing you did at the Con?
I took David Prudhomme to eat octopus. It was as fun as it sounds. The octopus was good, too.
What did you buy?
I bought many Greek comics.
Have you started your next project?
I’m preparing something along with Thanasis Petrou, an album that we’re hoping to have out until September. Maybe even sooner than that.

Catching up with everyone I know, as it is customary every year at the Con.

All fanzines and most Greek releases that I didn’t buy, but were handed to me through trading.
What is your next project?
Tasos writes IT’S NOT WHAT YOU THINK #2 and at some point I’ll continue doing COMMON COMICS, although I still don’t know when and which publisher will release it.

No. I’m meditating so that I’ll have it ready next year. I don’t know what it is. I’m meditating to find out.

I’ve already paid like 50 euros in stuff.

Yeah. I’m doing the sequel of RAW STEEL, a science fiction comic, some animated cartoons and more stuff for my health insurance benefits.

Chris Ware’s JIMMY CORRIGAN, Giganto’s new releases and the Greek editions of Jemma Press.

Yes and it’ll be KRAK #7 which is due for a July release.
